Huge 100Mbps demand: 44% of NBN users take top speed | Delimiter: "news 44 percent of NBN customers signed up so far have opted for the company’s fasted 100Mbps speed tier, the National Broadband Network Company revealed this week, as evidence continues to accumulate that Australians will overwhelmingly pay for the fastest broadband speeds available if given the chance.

NBN Co’s corporate plan published in December 2010 previously predicted that in the early years of its fibre rollout, the majority (52%) of customers who signed up for its fibre services would have picked the entry level speed tier it’s offering — a 12Mbps service which is slower even than current theoretical ADSL2+ speeds. The remainder were to be split largely between the next speed tranches of 25Mbps (17%) ad 50Mbps (23%), with only a small number (8%) taking the highest speed 100Mbps plans."

Peter Martin: Build the NBN if you must, but please don't destroy working assets

Peter Martin: Build the NBN if you must, but please don't destroy working assets: "The Optus high speed cable internet network is a national asset. Comprising 25,000 kilometres of coaxial cable strung across 550,000 poles in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane supported by 7000 kilometres of fibre the provided Telstra with its first genuine competition, putting its own wires direct into half a million homes.

Telstra fought back with FoxTel, Optus got burnt and has probably never recovered the cost of stringing the cables. But from an economic point of view what’s important is that the asset exists. Its costs have been sunk. What Optus has now is an asset that costs relatively little to operate and can deliver peak download speeds of 100 Mbps - far faster anything on Telstra’s copper wires. "

It provided for Optus progressively migrate its HFC customers to the NBN once the network had been rolled out in an area and was ready to provide services to customers served by Optus' HFC network."

NBN users opt for 100Mbps - Communications - News - ZDNet Australia: "Customers are picking the top fibre plan that is available on the National Broadband Network (NBN), more than any other plan, CEO Mike Quigley has revealed.

Quigley told a Budget Estimates hearing last night that, of the approximately 3500 customers with active fibre services on the NBN, the 100Mbps down and 40Mbps up plan had proved to be the most popular, so far.

"Overall, 37 per cent of active services on our fibre network have been on the fastest speed tier, which is 100Mbps down and 40Mbps up. Only 18 per cent of the active services on our fibre network are on the entry level speed tier of 12Mbps down and 1Mbps up."

Quigley revealed that 10 per cent of customers were on the 50Mbps plan, and 35 per cent were on the 25Mbps plan. Although NBN Co is far behind the 10,000 customers it had expected to have services active for by 30 June in its original corporate plan, the uptake of the higher tiered plans is much higher than was expected."

NBN Co - National Broadband Network - Australia | NBN Co to simplify migration of traditional phone services onto fibre: "NBN Co selects Primus for tests on telephone services

NBN Co will work with Primus to test new software designed to make it easier for any telecommunications or internet service provider to offer traditional analogue telephone services to consumers and businesses using the fibre network.
A successful test should give consumers confidence they can go to a wide range of service providers and switch from the copper network to fibre and have a quality telephone service using their existing telephone equipment.
Since the commercial launch of fibre services on the NBN, retail service providers have had the option of providing a telephone service that lets a homeowner use an existing analogue phone, or providing a telephone service over the broadband data connection, usually requiring new customer equipment. It should be possible to maintain the same phone number in either instance."

NBN Co: How We Chose Our Sites, And Why Turnbull’s Attacks Are Decidedly ‘Odd’ | Gizmodo Australia

NBN Co: How We Chose Our Sites, And Why Turnbull’s Attacks Are Decidedly ‘Odd’ | Gizmodo Australia: "At a media briefing in Sydney today, NBN Co executives outlined in more detail how it picked the sites in the new 3 year plan, as well as why Malcolm Turnbull’s attacks on NBN Co’s plans are “odd”.

A lot of Gizmodo readers were keen to find out if they were on the three-year rollout plan announced last Thursday, but for every reader that was elated to discover they were, there were three that were cranky they weren’t. That makes mathematical sense; the three-year plan covers around a quarter of the premises in Australia.

At NBN Co’s headquarters in Sydney today, NBN Co chief operating officer Ralph Steffens laid out in a little more detail how NBN Co chose the sites it did.

“It’s a straightforward exercise, but then an incredibly complex one to pull off. Once you have announced your first sites you need to build from there. You cannot build a patchwork across the nation, because that would be the most inefficient way to build the network.”"

But if what you’ve seen so far hasn’t tickled your fancy, it’s worth remembering that the vast majority of ISPs which intend to sell NBN plans haven’t yet announced them.

At a media briefing on the NBN Co rollout in Sydney today, we were reminded that there are now 40 providers who have signed NBN wholesale agreements. However, while that represents 95 per cent of the marketplace (unsurprising in a world of shrinking ISP choice), only 26 per cent are currently offering plans. The idea that what we have is all we’ll get it is one of the more common NBN misconceptions."

NBN rollout and delays: March 2012 and election 2013 | Crikey: "
Once the $11 billion-plus deal between NBN Co, Telstra and the federal government was cleared by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission last month, the path was clear for the acceleration of the national broadband network that NBN Co’s Mike Quigley unveiled this week. It doesn’t necessarily mean, however, that the rollout will actually be completed.

While NBN Co and the Gillard government will be anxious to get as much of the network in place and as many homes and business connected ahead of next year’s federal election, the numbers provided yesterday suggest that the opposition’s plan to halt the rollout and create a different kind of NBN using a mix of different and lower-cost (and lower-speed) technologies remains viable."
